History of Research

1985 ― Iancu Oraseanu started investigating the drains of ponors from Padis, among others he discovered the connection between the ponors from Varasoaia and Boga Spring

1986 ― Paul Damm and his father discover and unfold the entrance of the cave in the East side of the Varasoaia Peak

1988 ― Get to -104 m by unfolding several obstacles

1991 ― 126 m depth is reached after unfolding a bottleneck passage (the Mouse-Hole Stricture) from the Aragonite Hall (-70 m)

1992 ― The depth reached at the end of the camp of summer taking 2 weeks is 273 m

2003 ― Some unsuccessful attempts were made in the last 11 years to pass by the terminus. In the camp of summer the 8 m long stricture at -126 m is enlarged considerably

2004 ― Reaching -450 m during the camp of summer. In 1th of November the mapped depth is 643 m, the utmost depth ever reached in a cave in Romanian. New national record: V5 became the deepest cave in Romania

2005 ― Depth 650 m is reached at the base of two pits closed by siphons, mapped depth is 653 m

2008 ― During the camp of summer the connection between the 2 km long Frigider Cave and passages of V5 Cave was proven, the Varasoaia System came into existence

2006-2010 ― In winters of this period 6 underground camps with bivouac taking one week were organized in V5 Cave
